Job posted on OSU Jobs site May 24th, the posting closed May 20th...

May 23rd the new guy posts on FB he's got a big announcement soon. So in three days the committee at a major research university had the time to screen packets and conduct interviews and make an offer all in the days between graduations and Memorial Day Weekend.

Reaching out to OSU HR, I learned the job was posted May 10th on some secondary platform, so the search was deemed "fair and open". I will try to look at Interfolio more, but I haven't found job listings yet.

Problem is 95% of visiting Assistant Professor positions are not covered into actual permanent positions.

One of my colleagues at a university I taught at was a perpetually "visiting" assistant professor. He had been "visiting" for the last five or six years.

I don’t know the terms of employment, but I’d be worried about things like not getting a full benefits package (health, dental, 401k, etc) because the school lists it as “visiting”. I looked up the HR site for OSU and didn’t see anything with a quick perusal of the site.

I don't know about that other OSU but at The Ohio State University Visiting Assistant Professors are basically a dead end job with no chance for advancement or permanent employment. Tenure track positions are simply disappearing outside of fields with stay external research funding. The VaP role used to be thought of as a short term role while you are interviewing for tenure track positions at OTHER institutions, kind of like a post doctor's researcher for field outside of science or engineering. Now schools realize they can get someone who will provide them more stability than a per semester contract adjunct, perform advising, teach classes, do one on one mentoring but not have to provide to benefits of hiring someone in a tenure track roll.
