They should pay an insane amount of money to get Bloke to cut his Miraphone 98 to CC

Is it bad that I thought this was a serious post before I saw the author? Basically every other question on the tuba subreddit is a variant of this of or "I want a better tuba than my high school will loan me.. I have $250 or some magic beans, what should I buy."

A bulk of the others are "What is the best mouthpiece?"

While this is a goof, I would say there are young players out there who are doing the research and figuring out what tuba(s) is(are) best for them via reading various forums and social media and consulting with their teachers.

The buyer of my 2165 was a smart young man who had done a lot of research before buying my horn. They are out there.

Some teacher out there somewhere plays a Yamayork. You should only have the best tuba money can buy, and the most expensive tuba has to be the best. I haven’t heard you play, but if you want a music ed job, get the yamayork.

That's a lot like asking if parents should spring for a Hummer or an Bugatti as a college car.

There's an alternate tuba opening in the East McKeesport Philharmonic, and the audition is in two months. I would like to have time to adjust from my school's Shafer convertible to the YamaYork before auditioning.

If he even wants to stand a chance for that audition, you better get F tuba experience and a top of the line F tuba like last month. Good luck!

A friend of mine is designing one...even though he lives in Alabama and the factory is in China...
Via their acoustical calculations, it's going to be the best one every made...and - of course - it has 4 piston valves, 1 rotor, an 18-inch bell, and a 21.2mm bore (euro shank receiver).
A case is included, and the optional padded leather bag is only $900 additional. The price of the tuba w/case is $2200. It does include a mouthpiece, and a pair of white gloves.

If your freshman is one of the larger tuba-sized guys who play -- a 6/4 might not be the worst thing that could happen. A silly waste of money, yes, but if the kid is big enough an talented enough, it might be just right.

I can't figure out whether it's sillier to put a $40,000 extra-thin/extra-large tuba in a 3/8 inch padded bag, or whether it's sillier to put a tuba that only costs $5,000 in an $800 leather 3/8 inch padded bag.

After this weekend there will be a number of people with fewer fingers on one hand or the other.
