(at least, when it comes to the art of music performance)
A really good artist can rely only on their craft - when it is time to perform, but their heart is not in it. They can make people in the audience cry, while – the entire time - being pissed off at a colleague, or about some insurance notice received in the mail.
A related point: How much does the individual care about the quality of the work she/he is producing? I find that's the main determinant of both the process and the results. There are always limitations on what you can do (talent/time/resources), but the more you care, the better the results, in my experience.
