CA (CL): Replated King with Holton Bell

Post by aarongsmith »

Nice looking tuba with a weird MTS that reminds me of some of the old Conns.

Drool.

The picture resolution isn’t great but it looks like a 2341 to me (top pull 1st, no curly q 3rd).

Putting that bell on it would make it sharp but that tuning slide is similar to a lot of high pitch horns that were ‘converted’ to low pitch with a W main tuning slide.

Very nice looking tuba!

I bet it's a pretty good tuba.

As far as rhetoric is concerned, perhaps (??) the seller should have left out the detail about it being their third choice tuba.

"Sadly, I'm selling due to financial obligations" would have probably sufficed.

Right up there with, “I’ve recently upgraded to a better tuba and want to get rid of this…” which is seen quite frequently.

People seem to need to be given a reason for a sale. Well, those are reasons!

OP, thanks for posting this.
I'm picking it up tomorrow for our son-in-law (recently mustered out as a Marine tubist).
My wife was already planning the 7hr drive south to see them next weekend, and the tuba is currently about 2-1/2 hours NE of us, but we have a gig tomorrow about halfway there, anyway. Funny how well the scheduling worked out.
Coincidentally, turns out that the seller and I played together about 10 years ago (different sections - don't remember each other), and share a number of mutual acquaintances.

Follow-up for anyone interested:
Enjoyed comparing the Holton-King (presumably old-style 2341?) vs. new-style 2341
The Holton bell is an inch smaller (19" od), and from behind that bell the timbre sounds to me less billowy/woofy, more "noble" & direct than the newer-model horn. Also seems a bit nimbler & more in-tune with itself than its larger-belled younger relative.
I like the anti-spin water key and Reunion Blues leather bag, too.
I should send my wife with both and tell him to keep his preference. I wouldn't mind ending up with the older horn
