Schlipf mute fit for MW Model 20

Post by gocsick »

Does anyone know what size Schlipf mute would fit a Meinl Weston Model 20 with a 16.5" bell? It should be the same size for the old stovepipe style Miraphone 186 which also had a 16" bell.

I found these size charts, but don't know enough about the specs on the listed models to extrapolate

As amateur as they come...I know just enough to be dangerous.

Meinl-Weston 20
Holton Medium Eb 3+1
Holton Collegiate Sousas in Eb and BBb
40s York Bell Front Euphonium
Schiller Elite Euphonium
Blessing Artist Marching Baritone
Yamaha YSL-352 Trombone

I see the Miraphone 186 listed at Nr. 5. You could always email Herr Schlipfinger and ask:

I am assuming, maybe erroneously, that that is for the modern 17.75" (450mm) bell 186. I should have brought the Horn to MRWTEC and had @Lee Stofer fit it out, but I had the euphonium with me for a group recital and didn't feel like dragging extra stuff.

I have a modern 186 BBb here. I can measure the bell throat for you, and you can measure the throat of your MW20, and we can see if they are similar?

I think the only difference (please correct me if I am wrong) between the vintage 186 and the modern 186 is just the amount of "pancake" to the bell. The throats are similar/same. Again, please correct me if that is not the case, folks in the know.

@BuddyRogersMusic took over American distribution of Schlipf mutes a few years ago. Chris usually responds quickly to email/phone and should be able to answer your question.
