Man, I really want to see a picture of that brass band on top a large elephant in the parade at the GABBF.

The rest of you all look terrific in these pictures.

@tofu no elephants this year, I'm afraid, but there is always a huge turnout and some cool stuff going on in the parade. This year the 2nd Cavalry Brigade Band was in front of the wagon: https://2ndcavalrybrigadeband.weebly.com/

GABBF is such a singular event. From the time I moved away from KY in 2017 until 2023 I wasn't able to play in it after making it almost every year between 2006 and 2017. These past couple years I've made the flight down, secured a borrowed and now a cheap/weird tuba to keep at my parents' house, and played with the host group. Always fun, great performers, nice hometown atmosphere. A bit rainy this year but everyone still had a great time.

I have a friend who occasionally plays in a band (he plays Eb alto/tenor horn) that rides around on old-time high wheel bicycles. Quite a sight.

Somehow I missed this entire thread back then. We need to resurrect it with all our new stuff.
And -- what do I do when all I see is a square and the word Image? Is it my end or the poster's end that's the problem?
Going to go look up the pic from when I just got the NStar. I had a lot more hair then.

That looks to be Martin’s Monster Eb size, is that correct?

I think it is the intermediate model, from digging around on the internet some years ago. Bell is 20” and I usually sit it on my left leg. I’m not super tall - about 5’7” - so that might make the horn seem larger too.

Not as certain as i feel i should be, and recording bell may skew things, but i believe 20" is the mammoth model on eb?

Out of curiosity, what is the collar diameter?

I can speculate that is a blast to play.

Believe it is around 6.5”. I’m out of town or I would just go measure it. I do have some other measurements handy: 39” height, 19” to mouthpipe, 20” bell, .690 bore (main slide inlet and 2nd slide inside diameter).

I’ll maybe do a little digging to see if I saved the reference for intermediate vs mammoth.

It is fun to play but I’m starting to be limited by having only three valves and a lack of “ooph” down low that isn’t all me. So I have a different horn coming that hopefully cures all ills. We’ll see how that goes.

They had two sizes of Eb: “Medium” (which had a 17” upright bell or a (?)” recording bell and a bore of around .620. Then the “Monster” Eb which had a 20” upright bell or as you say a 20” recording bell and a bore around .687-.690”

Then in BBb their “Medium” shared the bottom bow and bell and valve bore with the Monster Eb and then there was the Mammoth BB that we’re more familiar with.

The Medium Ebs play quite well with intonation and low range being strong compared to competitors. The Medium BBb also are good players. I’ve never had a chance to play one of their Monster Eb but I sure would like to (two!).

Mammoth BBb? I’m a fan.

About half way down page one is a catalog page. The pictured Eb is the Monster. The pictured BBb is an earlier model Mammoth. A bit later they changed the (upright) bell diameter from 23 to 20” and the 3rd valve loop was changed.

Thanks. Certainly seems this is the monster Eb then. Not sure where the intermediate business came from.

You’re certainly welcome to try it if you ever find yourself in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Nice! Although if I had both a sousa and a 20J, I'd probably go for the sousa over the 20J with harness for my back's sake!

If i had to guess, 6.5" woulda been my guess.

BBb medium sousa has that collar, as does an odd kids version i got (although there is between a 16th and 8th inch difference, so sadly they are not exactly interchangeable. No idea why...)

I bet the low notes are in there somewhere, but i do acknowledge somehow many eb (including my upright eb martin mammoth) have some sort of tendency to round everything under the low eb up almost to d despite whatever fingerings one uses, least for some style of blowing... i blame condensation for lack of a better excuse.
