Re: Hawaii Symphony Orchestra
I think the main reason to become a member of a professional symphony orchestra is the overwhelming respect that is showered on the musicians by their executive directors, their office workers, and their boards of directors.

Sounds familiar.UncleBeer wrote: Tue Jan 07, 2025 9:59 pm Wonder if it's one o' those gigs where they make you audition...for your own job.![]()
I lost a bunch of buddies who apparently won't be returning.
again: It ain't my job; it's theirs. They can fire me whenever they want to, and I can quit them whenever I want to. I tend to wonder how many graduates are cranked out annually by conservatories and conservatory level university schools of music. I dare say it's got to be way more than those who retire from symphony orchestras, each year.
Hawaii - percentage wise, is losing more population annually (2/3rds of a percent) than any other state, due to out-migration, high cost of living, low birth rate, and aging population (all the typical reasons a state loses population).
Most people wouldn't guess the Hawaii is first, percentage wise in diminishing population rate. Of course, New York is second and California's third... and Illinois is right up there (down there?).
It's going to become tougher and tougher to sell orchestra concerts the public. You don't need 65 people to play drones underneath rap and hip hop. All you really need is a laptop, a big ass amplifier, and some big ass speakers.
Re: Hawaii Symphony Orchestra
My own "You gotta be kidding" moment was my orchestra programming break dancers to us playing Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance". Pure desperation. What a waste.bloke wrote: Mon May 19, 2025 9:26 pm You don't need 65 people to play drones underneath rap and hip hop. All you really need is a laptop, a big ass amplifier, and some big ass speakers.

I believe that sort of stupidity/banality is referred to as "reimagining".UncleBeer wrote: Tue May 20, 2025 3:56 amMy own "You gotta be kidding" moment was my orchestra programming break dancers to us playing Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance".
