I do have a small shank mpc, a Wilhelm Monke (oddball one off German mpc that I picked up a little while ago). It actually works quite well with that. I haven't played it much, because it needs to have those braces replaced. It's not fragile, but it sure should be stronger!

bort2.0, I came across your post about the antique Conn by way of Google Lens. I had to join the tuba group to try to speak to you. I have recently acquired a Conn tuba/ euphonium like yours from my cousin, who does not play tuba. Got it from his dad's estate. He also did not play tuba, but collected random instruments. Been sitting in a garage for 10 years. I am a trumpet player, and don't know diddly about low brass. Did you get your horn fixed up? How much did you end up putting into it? I am hoping to pass this to a nephew who doesn't have much money. The horn overall, considering its age, is in decent shape. Like yours, it is black. There's a pretty good kink in the 14 inch bell, and a few other dents. Mine might possibly be in a different key from yours, as some of the tubing on the valves is slightly different. How would one determine what key it is? I don't have a proper mouthpiece for it. The receiver is a hair under 9/16. I used a tape measure, not calipers. The only mouthpiece I had dropped all the way up to the cup. Might be trombone. I was able to honk out a few notes on it. The valves work. I did scrub them up a bit with some Dawn and a green Scotchbrite. Oiled with Al Cass. Will definitely need more work, but, they go down and up. I ran water through it. Sluiced out some mouse poop and a lot of dust. I don't think there is any dead critters or nests in there, as it does play. I did not try any slides, because I don't know which ones are supposed to move. You mentioned serial number. I found 16710 stamped on the 2nd valve casing. Would that be serial number? Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If I read that right, if 12500 is 1887, 17691 is 1888, if mine reads 16710, that means it was built in that time frame?

Short answer, I never fixed mine up.

I love these old little eb horns. They are so much fun. Great find! You saved that horn from some non musician bolting it to a wall in thier retro themed diner/brewery. Play on.

If you decide to offload it, let me know. I have family in Waltham that would pick it up for me and transport when they visit.
