is larger than it may appear in some rearview mirrors

note: To some with particularly large rears, please notify me ahead of time, so that I may avoid using these mirrors.

yep…zaklee… 🙄

… and a Wick straight mute – without its corks being trimmed at all – nearly bottoms out in the bell of this instrument.

Nice. Looks a lot like mine. Completely different model, but even so, looks a lot like mine. Three valves on top, one sticking out at an angle on the side, leadpipe for mouthpiece insertion, etc.

That is one of the things that fascinates me about this instrument genre, compared to tuba. One key, the vast majority are top-action, a section of players will all be pointing their bells in the same direction, and so forth. Thinking back on bands I've played in, the euph section seemed comprised of wowsers,* and the tuba section comprised of larrikins.**

Oddly, the really hot-shot euphonium players around here don’t seem particularly interested in participating in the community bands.

When I was taking my newly built B-flat (tuba) to one of the community bands (a band that’s particularly friendly to allowing me to come-and-go) to strengthen up my B-flat tuba music-reading, I would also stick the euphonium in the back of the car - just in case only this one person (who really struggled) showed up, so I could help them out a little bit - helping them hear how things are supposed to “go”.

Before they cut on me tomorrow, I think I might eat a couple of Tide Pods, just to see how good they REALLY are.

As to the euphonium...
It's easy to dance to...I'll give it an 85, Dick.

Everyone seems to be overlooking the fact that it is made of solid brass, although - technically - it is hollow.
Some may not view this as a significant distinction, but it certainly is when it comes to chocolate Easter bunnies.

Clicked on the wwbw link above...$12K for a euphonium??!?

I guess I shouldn't be surprised: The Buffet Prestige alto clarinet on wwbw runs $15,635.

I've seen charcoal drawings with better definition... 🤣

How's the low range? I still remember that Miraphone 1258 I played over a decade ago. Oversized receiver (my tuba mp fit), massive low range, super easy to play. I was going to trade my bass trombone for one but one of us backed out, cannot remember if it was the other guy or myself.

Assuming you are actually interested in the low range response…
With my previous (fine) instrument, I was using an Elliott contrabass trombone mouthpiece with it - when covering bass trombone parts at church gigs.

I’ve now set that mouthpiece aside and demoted it to my sock drawer. I’m getting just as much bark and just as much fullness - in that same range - with a traditional bass trombone mouthpiece, now, with this instrument.

I’m not going to identify the make and model of the (bass trombone) mouthpiece, only to say that it’s remarkably good, it hasn’t been made for decades, and - even when made - very few knew of it, though it was/is a known brand and basically “in plain sight“.

When I’m a little bit more mobile, I might take this instrument outside and photograph it in my usual spot - which offers all day nice overcast lighting.
