I don't know what this is all about...

My workshop’s water heater started leaking yesterday. I turned off the water to it late last night when I finally had time… The cut off is underground outside.
I’ll buy a replacement today or tomorrow and stick in another one. I’m certainly not calling anyone to do that for me. I’ve lived here 15 years and replaced the two that were in the house myself. Before I replaced the two in the house, I extended their lives by replacing their elements first.
It costs too much to pay other people to do stuff like that, at least as far as I’m concerned… and considering that - these days - you don’t even have to solder and that none of mine require gas hook ups, they’re stupid simple to install.

I just wish that this tank is gone out in August, after I got all of my school repairs finished and delivered.

I agree completely. I helped my stepfather do the same thing last month. He has changed hot water heaters. I have changed hot water heaters. A neighbor we called to help manhandle and steady the new one has change hot water heaters. Because of our respective experience, it took less time, and of course no money paid to third parties, to install it properly.

The county I live in is making gas appliances illegal.

We all know electricity is generated by positive vibes and ether.

I just don't know what's good for me.

I don't mind paying folks to do stuff that they're good at that I'm not. Technically anyone can learn how to code, but I've spent the last 40 years doing it, and I appreciate being paid to do so.

My uncle has been a plumber for over 50 years. He's said that the best thing that ever happened to his profession was the DIY movement. He says it turned a lot of $50 jobs into $500 jobs.

That said, I fix/replace stuff around the house that I think I can do reasonably well.

Re: water heaters. My mom had a tankless one installed after getting tired of "There's no hot water!" when we all came to visit. It lasted the last 15 years she was around and worked reliably the whole time. It was still going strong when we sold her house after she passed. I'm going to strongly consider one when our current one gives up the ghost.

My understanding is that the electric tankless are crappy (don't save that much money, and don't heat up water quickly enough), all are expensive, and a log house doesn't have hollow walls...and my ceilings are the same as my roof - so no ventilation for gas...and I'm not running a gas line around to the back of my barn. Also, I'd have to remove shelving (over the barn's water tank) for gas ventilation.

yeah...I had to wait a few days for the mail to bring it to the box - down by the highway.

likely: Avoiding touching the element with oily fingers is recommended.
