I play in a moderately busy brass quintet where the leader, when introducing the individual members to the audience, as a “point of interest” routinely mentions that the horn I’m playing on at that given moment has been self-constructed - in effect, broadcasting what equipment I’m playing on, and that there is a unique “talent” involved with my performance on it, and therefore could theoretically appeal to non-musicians who create things with their hands.
The usual response:

I could copy this post word for word ( I guess I did...) and it would be 100% applicable - every word of it.
them:
OK... fine... so sit down and play something.

Yep, reminded of this sentence from time to time. I change tubas periodically for a few reasons. I think a particular tuba (or mouthpiece) will hide a playing weakness, will fit in a new playing situation better, will be more comfortable,a trend comes alone that I want to explore, I want a slightly different sound, I’m bored and want a new challenge to master, a new model comes along that I’m curious about, one time a big financial setback.A handful of times a colleague has mentioned one of these tuba changes. I’m pretty sure they are just being polite. We do it for ourselves.

tofu and Mike hit it on the nose.
Younger people are simply being polite and finding something to say or to converse about, and (per previous posts to theirs) older guys - who played tuba in the past - mostly want to tell you about themselves. ("My section leader in high school was fourth runner up to National Sousaphone Champion", etc.)
Those of us who are male - and try to tell our wives stuff that is fascinating to us about our instruments - see our wives or girlfriends' eyes glaze over after about 2.4 seconds.
