What kinds of playing are you doing nowadays?
mostly orchestral, some trad jazz, & I play with the Peninsula Banjo Band!!

How many tubas do you currently own, and what do you use the most?
5 - YamaYork, mostly. and the Wessex Chicago presence for Trad Jazz and with the banjo band. Norm Pearson F when I need it. I use the 4/4 Yamaha (6-something) for smaller works.

What's your favorite memory playing the tuba?
Summer at Disneyland. Solo tour in Japan. My weeks with the SF Symphony

What's the highest-profile playing you've done?
SF Symphony, for sure

Where can I hear your playing?
I still play with Symphony San Jose. It is not the 40-week job I used to have, but we play 10-12 concerts a year. Playing NUTCRACKER this December.

In 1971, I bought a Bill Bell Model Meinl-Weston. I believe Gary Buttery has this tuba now. The big Hirsbrunner I bought IN Switzerland, at Peter's shop, was a special instrument as well. The ones I wanted to sell, are LONG gone. Honestly, I never had a crappy tuba. I am pretty thorough when I purchase an instrument. Some didn't suit me as well, and after a year or so, after giving them a good testing, I'd move them along.

It has its place, but I prefer this and the Tubenet.

@York-aholic Funny, when I was studying with Bobo, we used to talk about all sorts of things. Once he got frustrated with my over analyzing and said, "Just play the forking tuba!!!" Best advice I ever got. When I started struggling with task specific focal dystonia, I went back this concept and with Jan Kagarice's help, it saved my career.

@bloke - None. What's in my tablet is PD. As for my orchestral gigs, I still use paper parts.

I can't say that I have ever looked into the specifics for sheet music, but I was always under the understanding that if a person had legal rights to a work, that making copies for personal use was completely legal - IE if you scan itnto your tablet for your use, you are fine. Giving it to others, no . . .

So, in that vein, 100% of what I have on paper is in my tablet, with the paper being filed and held as my "right to use" (much in the same way as making a (dating myself) cassette copy of an album to use in the car has always been legal.

How about American in Paris. Is that stored in anyone's tablet?

I use paper at concerts as well, but because I'm not interested in buying a tablet and because almost all organizations that hire me to play don't supply me with one with the music loaded on it. An additional reason is because when sheet music falls on the floor, it doesn't usually crack.

@tclements, can you share anything about dealing with FD? How did it first manifest?

I quit all playing hardly at all for five years, and playing in earnest for about 8 years, because I was dealing with FD-like symptoms. Got back on the horse in 2022 and never really looked back.
