slicking out bows and bells for others' frankenprojects
Posted: Mon Nov 25, 2024 7:48 pm
Not too long after this site was born, I offered this service - making it clear that I'm not willing to design/build others' franken-stuff, but AM willing to smooth out bells and bows (maybe even valvesets...but NO RECONFIGURING NOR VALVE-ADDING...If (??) I'm doing any of that absurdly time-consuming stuff, I'm ONLY doing it for MYSELF...and even if you could pay some confiscatory price I might toss in the air to do that - [my] life's too short.)
Anyway...
Folks have been bringing/dropping off/sending me their projects' body parts...
Here's a set of big ol' Holton BB345 bows that I just finished up for someone's project.
(I was getting towards the finish line of getting the same model ready to sell MYSELF, but - ok - I stopped to work on these...as well as other interruptions...ie. "stuff that's lucrative"...such as school repairs, where they're grateful for "good" work, do not demand-nor-expect "perfect" work, and - as long as they can get it approved - often don't care what they're charged...It ain't their money. )
You can send-or-bring stuff if you like...but (defined above) the limits of my willingness to help are clear:
- no complete frankenprojects
- no tuba "restorations"
- no "can-you-add-a-fourth-valve-to-this-hundred-year-old-three-valve tuba?" gigs
bloke "making frankentubas nicer-lookin' - one bow/one bell at a time"
I haven't made any additional progress on 345 #2 (stupid-long thread in the repairs forum), as someone tossed 345 #3 at me...
They'll be sticking it all back together. They just wanted me to slick out all the parts for them.
I don't care for silver instruments for myself, but I sorta prefer old thickly-plated silver bells and bows, because I can shine 'em up and spot little not-smooth-enough spots that I didn't previously notice. Anyway...These parts are worn lacquer...que sera...
I charge reasonable dough to do this stuff. "Blueprinting" a carelessly-built 4-valve valve section...That's a little bit more pricey.
OLD REPAIR-GUY JOKE:
YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THIS STUFF BEFORE I STARTED...
IT LOOKED PRETTY GOOD.
