Not only do we play crap, but we play crap outdoors, after it's barely dropped into the 80s Fahrenheit from the 90s Fahrenheit...

... and we wonder why neither management nor the patrons nor the boards of directors have any respect for us.

Indeed. That is why I play a souzy, a 'glass "real" 36K for outdoor gigs.

I assumed that he was referring to the audience when he said "patrons".

Exactly, Br'er Pope. Patrons as in "a patrons reception", not ticket purchasers, comp ticket holders (such as a trashy old bloke), nor attendees of free outdoor concerts - whereby the temperature is often up in the '80s and the humidity is in the 90s, and we artistes (many of us with magnificent 6/4 eastern hemisphere manufactured CSO York replicas - though I'm a lowly, unschooled, blue-collar BB-flat bass player) play inspired arrangements of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" (K627)

No. "Patrons" are the solicited donors who get artificial accolades printed on programs depending on their level of donation, which can all too often degrade into a "bragging right" or other clamor for recognition instead of simply supporting the ensemble, all in order to get invited to these "Patron Events," including a lot of wine and cheese just so they can hobnob with other "Patrons," which is a form of being a groupie since the stars of the ensemble are expected to attend and mingle.
