Yamaha Sousaphone AIRLift Stand - Anyone Have One???

Post by Doc »

The internet is not my friend when looking for one of these. They are not in production, and I can't seem to find any currently for sale on the used market. Anyone have one lying around that they want to sell or know of a secret stash somewhere?

This would be for a helicon, so other stands are not an option. The K&M 149, while a possibility, looks flimsy and seems to be expensive for what you get. I'll build my own for a lot less than $179, and it will be much more stout (important on tight stages in festival tents).

Thanks!

I have both stands but I'm not really interested in parting with them.

The AIRLifts can also be found under the name "Stadium Hardware". Not sure if those came before Yamaha badging or after. Either way, I believe they are identical.

I have 2 complaints about the AIRLift stand:
-They're big and heavy. Even when you separate the 2 parts, it's still pretty bulky.
-It doesn't fit horns with shoulder plates (like a big Conn) very well. I modified mine.*

But they are very sturdy, very adjustable, and very well made.

As for the K&M, I agree that it's a bit on the flimsy side. Which is weird for them.
Its design doesn't allow for both upper arms to make contact with the body. So it only makes contact with the stand in 3 places.*

I have a couple of these (non-sousaphone) stands. Mine are called Stadium Hardware and were made by Randall May. It seems that Yamaha had some connection, as distributor?, at least for a time, and I see some online now as being AIRlift and being made by May. Maybe Randall split! I don't know if these are still made but they are VERY high quality in design and build. Mine are for 4/4 rotary tubas and I would love to find one for piston horns and for sousaphone. I have poked around online a couple of times but haven't had any luck.

I'm not sure of the exact story either, but your findings concur with mine. Seems like a really nice piece of equipment, but it apparently never got enough traction to stay in production. With marching band being what it is here, plus the Yamaha name, you would think Texas band directors would have purchased enough to keep the stands in production for a LONG time. :smilie5:
