Boston Symphony, 1975

Post by bort2.0 »

Chester Schmitz?

Mrs Bort picked up a set of Sibelius symphony records at an estate sale today. Is that Chester?

That’s a dangerous path to go down... especially for a gear head like you. :smilie2:

Hahaha! It's a set of seven symphonies, so they'll take me a while to get through it. But I'm very much looking forward to it. $3!

Don't I know it.

I've already got a 70s Harman Kardon receiver and a nice set of Made in West Germany speakers. Add a record player and I'll have the full 1975 experience ready to go!

You could do a lot worse. At least you won't be tempted to get a cheap all-in-one sewing machine.

It's pretty cheap to add a decent turntable with a pickup that won't hurt your records.

^ I actually wasn't trying to be sarcastic -- the current setup sounds great, miles better than the new Sony receiver and modern speakers I also have. The best receiver I had was a newer Marantz -- sounded awesome! But I had two, and they both broke and couldn't be repaired reasonably, so that was the end of that.

The old Harman Kardon has a very clean and clear sound to it. Records are certain to sound far more "alive" than most other sources. Heck, even CDs on a nice CD player are a lot better than streaming quality. :eyes:

I didn't take it as sarcasm. There was some really nice stuff in the 70s and 80s. You should have a good pre-amp in that receiver, so you don't need to find a turntable with built-in amps or signal processing.

 My bad then! And thanks for the reassurance!

I also picked up a Chicago Symphony/Solti, Bruckner 6 record. Ok, not my favorite Bruckner, but certain to have some fine brass playing.

I don’t know about the 70’s ... I bit on the quadraphonic idea back then. That didn’t pan out so well.

I still have my Sony SQ receiver somewhere....
