In case it makes a difference, is this as a first instrument (need to learn music reading and all that, too), or for picking up baritone after playing something else?

Considering you read already, Rubanks intermediate and advanced methods would work. Then transition to Rochut etudes. After that seek out tools for your specific needs (range, technique, flexibility, etc.)
