Happy Tuba Tuesday
This Tuba Tuesday the Museum feature’s one of its oldest American made tubas: the circa 1870, 3 {string} rotary valves, Eb tuba by The Boston Musical Instrument Manufactory, shown below.
The Boston Musical Instrument Manufactory {BMIM} was established in 1869 in Boston, Massachusetts. It continued until 1919 when it was purchased by the Cundy-Bettony Company.
The rotary valve was patented by the Austrian maker Josef Riedl in 1835. American brass instrument makers adopted the rotary valve in the mid to late 19th Century. By the 1890s, all American makers had adopted the piston valve exclusively for their brass instruments, and that preference has lasted to today.
