With a 19" upright bell this tuba is a STEAL! Someone needs to snap it up TODAY! If you want it and have a good friend who lives within a hundred miles or so of ABQ you need to wire them the money and get them to pick it up TODAY! You can work out how to get it from them once you have it paid for and in the possession of your friend. Details work themselves out when opportunities like this pop up. JUMP ON THIS IF YOU WANT IT!!! It will evaporate *very* quickly. Make sure your friend can go to SEE the horn, IN PERSON, with the money. If it is some old dude in a home as described it is probably legit. If it is some young kid ask to meet the person who is selling it. If they won't accommodate this it may be hot. But this one feels like it is the real deal. If you enlist the help of your friend, you must pay them for their time, even if that is pizza and beer, you need to take care of them. And if someone here buys this without the aid of a friend (or intermediary) then spend the money for pizza and beer on yourself, because you got a hell of a good deal!

I gave them a call, seems legit. The guy seemed sad to sell the tuba. We all reach that age when we have to stop playing.

I hope someone here takes it off his hands. It would be very sad to think some moron parents bought it for junior and then let him trash it because "It was so inexpensive that it couldn't be *worth* anything."
Someone *please* rescue this tuba, and in the process please take some time to get to know the seller a little bit, learn his story, let him know that his baby will be taken care of. It will kill me when I finally have to sell my horns, and I will fret about them going to someone who will value them as I have, to the point of me making less money to ensure this happens. I am certain this fellow is in the same circumstance…
… unless the horn sucks and he is using his story as a means to get rid of it quickly — which is possible, but I seriously doubt it.
These horns are consistently good players, and the 19" bell (obviously from another horn, or perhaps the body was overhauled in the past [gorilla buffing?]) are a fantastic combination, the very best of the various bells made for these tubas, IMHO.
If someone here buys it, please tell us the guy's story and share some photos of your new baby!

Wow. That’s a great deal. If I was local I’d happily help out and probably slide the guy an extra Benjamin just because.

Me, too. I would certainly try to get him more money and assure him his horn would be cared for and valued.

They offered to ship it.
They were VERY old and when I called I could tell I wasn't getting anywhere. Maybe you'll have different luck

Not me. I know no one out there and I live about 1,100 miles from him. I would have to spend twice the cost of the horn just for the expense of the drive!
How were you not getting anywhere with him? Was he argumentative or something like that?

The seller sold this horn out from under me. We set up a meeting for Saturday morning at 10am, booked all of my travel and lodging for the trip. This morning I get an email from the seller that they got a better offer from someone else. These folks are and never have been professional musicians. I wish them luck on the sale of this instrument, yeah right!!!

Well, forget whatever I said about this guy wanting his old baby to go to a good home and blah, blah, blah. If he made a deal and then screwed the person with whom that deal was made then I hope he chokes on the money. He is not a "good man" in my book. Good men keep their word.
What a disappointment the seller turned out to be.

This was to be the first stop on my whirlwind week long vacation to the southwest. Honestly, it's just the principal of the whole situation, backing out of the deal the day I was heading out for an established meeting. I could give a shirt about missing out on an old 2341, that's probably a POS. I'll just spend my vacation with my MW Bill Bell that the seller didn't back out of the deal, practicing in a desert near you over the next week, very early of course.

I bet the seller is griping on his Geriatric Coot FB page about how some slicker was about to rip him off but outfoxed him!!

This is what happens when too many of us start poking around and alert people. Common sense dictated to this old guy he had something more valuable than he was wanting to sell it for and took the better offer knowing multiple people were making offers and info farming. Sometimes it's best to admire and dream silently and let the market work on it's own, unless you live close enough to grab it quick and get out of Dodge. If you didn't have intentions to actually BUY the horn, why would you just "talk" to the guy? You know what kind of horn this is, the price and mostly the condition from looking at the photos what else could a tire kicker want to know here, I don't get it? Whoever did that ruined someone else's travel and purchase plans, not ethical IMO.

For better or worse... I only talk about craigslist ads after I've decided that I don't want to buy it for myself.

I'm not some big time city slicker, just a single dad that raised two kids from pre teens through college on my own. My family has been in the music biz for 3 generations. Chew on that folks!!!

I appreciate Hal for posting these CL deals. Yeah, it can start a feeding frenzy, but if you are local and can jump on a deal fast, they can be very helpful.

Never meant to imply otherwise. My 20J steal was courtesy of Hal letting me know. Maybe I never thanked Hal for that... Thanks,
@hrender !

You don't think that's the story he's going to tell tell his FP pals in Old Cooterville, do you??
