Meinl-Weston/Melton model 54½50...??

In a few days, I'll have some inside/outside tubing (two pairs of sizes, obviously) to extend my main tuning slide (on my model 5450) by a total of 11 inches or so...

...lengthening it to a B♮ tuba.

Of course, this is just a couple of extensions, and nothing that can't be undone in a matter of seconds.

I just thought it might be fun to try a few low sharp-key orchestral excerpts on TRULY "an instrument that MIGHT?? play better in sharp keys".

I'll post in this thread about it later...

Dare I ask what you’ve been drinking and in what quantities?

I might just want to stop by and join you!

I would just like to see what the intonation characteristics are like, and - if “good“ - I’d like to run through a handful of low-tessitura sharp-keys excerpts, and see what it’s like to play them while mashing down fewer buttons.

Understood. It will be interesting to see what happens. As you say, quite easy mod to make the extenders.

I look forward to hearing what a foot of cylindrical tubing does. I’ve had a couple of old horns with extenders to bring a high pitch horn down to low pitch (less tubing obviously) but noticed no real difference in intonation or blow.

Less finger gymnastics would probably be nice.

The prospect of playing “Der Walkürenritt” In the equivalent of “C Major on a C instrument” is somewhat a alluring.

As far as the additional cylindrical tubing in the main slide is concerned, most (all...??) of the fingerings to play those passages without it add that much additional cylindrical tubing, anyway.

I suppose that should have occurred to me…

I’ve heard that it’s a lot easier to memorize textbooks than to think. 😉
