Thanks! I knew I had seen it before, but didn't think it was here. Optimistic price for sure. I'd like to have one, but not in that price range.

A friend has one in the same configuration that has had a 4th added at some point and it plays great. The 2 front action ones (top action ones as well) that I’ve owned have had a great sound, loose all kinds of focus on B, Bb, and A below the staff and had some intonation quicks (to varying degrees).

If this one plays more like my friends horn and less like the 2 I owned...

Beats me. Horns are worth what the market will bear. I bought one in fabulous shape (lacquered, 3v front action) from Robb Stewart for $900 about 16-17 years ago. Sold it for the same after about 3 years.

Bought a rough silver one with shot valves and crushed MTS for about $500 about 10 years ago. That got traded in as part of a rather large repair bill on another tuba.

Thanks for the tag, Doc - you’re a daisy if you do!

It’s got the patented high/low pitch doughnut, so it would be similar to converting a top action horn, even though it is already side-action (length will need to be added somewhere to avoid a main tuning slide that hits the chair when pulled out). With that said, $1000 is a little above what I would pay, but it’s certainly a good candidate for the laboratory - I’ve got a 4 valve set already tubed in E flat that would fit perfectly……..

Needs a lot of work, a new lead-pipe, and valves are of unknown quality.

But if @Yorkboy already has a 4 valve ready, valve quality isn't such an issue, and maybe there already is a lead-pipe attached to it? Which would have to be done anyway if his are front action. And yeah, i'm sure there is more to changing a top action body to accommodate front action valves than just putting the valves on the other side, but well... is it worth considering?

Yeah, now i think of it, i am the least qualified to say it might be useful for someone else. I have exhausted my utility* by simply reminding folk it was still up for sale.

A "tall bell version" of this would be the 18" bell. They aren't truly a tall bell, as the horn is about 33.75", same as the front action 20" bell Monster Eb. However, the bend of the top bow is lower on the horn so it looks like a tall bell (whereas the 700 series is taller than the Model 33). They are really, really uncommon and as far as I can tell from catalogs, only came in top action at a time when Ebs were going out of fashion.

Yes, I sort of did, some time ago. It actually had a detachable bell - the same length as the 700 series bell, but detachable. I eventually removed that bell and used it on another project that would benefit more from it, and replaced it with a Holton monster E flat bell.
I actually have, in my stash of parts, a very old York “short” bell with the smaller 18” bell flare…….I’ve been considering trying it on that horn pictured above, just to see what happens.
