Wessex XL Test videos

Post by Dan Tuba »

I recently purchased a Wessex XL tuba to test/tryout. I have only had the tuba a few days. Here are a few "test" videos that I have made so far. I will keep adding videos as I test this tuba out.

The valves seem to be very good on this tuba. I haven't experienced any problems so far, and I have been playing it a lot. Overall, I have been surprised by the performance of this tuba. I think that I am going to keep it.

Thank you all very much for your feedback. I'm not sure if I will make the cut as a Wessex Artiste, but I like this tuba 🤷😂

So how’s it going with the xl? Sound anything like a German Kaiser, or just big American that happens to have rotors? The videos sound great but can’t quite read the tone character.

I apologize for the audio quality. It was recorded with my cell phone, so probably not the best representation of the sound.

I don't think that it's a true Kaiser sound. It's kind of a blend between the Kaiser and American sound, but leans more towards the American sound. I bought this as kind of an update/upgrade to my Conn 25J, so that my bell faces the right way 🤣. It's nice having the fifth valve. Overall, I have been very pleased with this tuba for what I use it for. It's a nice tuba.

The tuba sounds beautiful. Those are big horns and not easy to play well. Well Done!!

I noticed in an older thread you used to own a Wessex Lucerne also. Could you compare and contrasting it with the XL? Considering adding a b flat tuba to the mix. an old Cerveny 601 or Holton 345, but Chinese things considered. Would need a great low e and e flat, and the b flat tone quality or why bother. Thanks! .
