Since our Concert bands are currently a no-go, a few of us locals have started a Dixieland Band. If any of you are vacationing in or near beautiful Detroit Lakes, MN (45 mins east of Fargo, or merely 3.5 hrs NW of Minneapolis) please join us for our first public performance next Tuesday, August 25th, at the bandshell in Detroit Lakes, right on the lake (in case of rain we'll be next door in the Pavilion). 7 pm is go-time. Be sure to catch me during intermission or afterwards to introduce yourself!
By the way, there will be chow there, or Zorba's is just down the block.
Also, we are in need of a banjo player; if that's you then please pm me here, I'll get you the details.

I played in a dixie band in college and really enjoyed it. A decade later I bought an Eb sousa, thinking that would be the best horn to continue playing dixie on. Kept that horn for 10-15 years, only selling it when I got an Eb tuba

Yeah, except for those novelty numbers programmed into a concert band performance, this is my first 'dedicated dixie' band in many years. All our musicians except one have some jazz background, and most seem to be getting comfortable with improvising solos. None of us are arrangers so we're using printed material to get going, except that our leader wanted a no-printed-music tuba feature, so I get to cut loose on When The Saints Go Marching In. I open and close the tune, complete with a vocal "Amen" at the end. I'm hoping to add Don't Get Around Much, Anymore, Sweet Georgia Brown, and maybe Tiger Rag in the future. We've gotta' get this first one out of the way, though, to see exactly what we've got!

PS. I've discovered that much of Yakety Sax fits into Saints, so I've worked a few bars into the final verse. I wonder how many in the audience will get it? Maybe they'll start chasing each other, like the end of Benny Hill!

Good question. If I can get my wife there I'll ask her to record things, then I"ll post it to my YouTube channel. I will post a link here...if it's worthy!

Note: I am used to my horn filling concert halls, was really unprepared for it being so "directional" outdoors until I saw these videos. I may need to obtain a bell-front horn for future use.

It may be a bit directional, but it’s still there. I don’t know how you hold that beast and not get tired! You ought to have a helicon or a sousaphone. Or sit down with a King or a 20J. Either way, keep it going!

Since my college recital, I've always stood for solos, so pretty used to it. The Holton is ok for several songs standing, but I did all the rest of the show seated. I do have the neoprene strap, but haven't felt the need for it so far, however if we ever take it to the street I'll be strapping 'er on for sure! If the stars align, I'd love to nab a 4/4 bell front/valve front BBb, or possibly EEb in same configuration. We'll see if this group keeps playing together, first.

I encountered a for-sale Holton (real...not "Yamaha") with a very large upright bell, but NOT a 345 and NOT 6/4, recently.

It intrigued me, so I bought it (a B-flat). I haven't yet got my hands on it (should be soon).

I'll show it (another thread) when I've got it.

I believe Yorkboy and Dan Oberloh surely know much more about than I do, as I'm not much of a Holton-o-phile.

That was terrific! Very well played and I really enjoyed your interaction with your audience. I think a bell front recording bass would work really well as it projects wonderfully. You must be a really strong person to be able to manage that Holton tuba in the air so long. Keep your band playing!
