Hi all,

and a good start on the new year to all of you. I need your expertise here, or at least some good advice... I have just bought myself a Besson 983, and I am curious about if I have to change mouthpiece as well. I have played with a DW 2L the last 30 odd years. Is that a well suited mp for the instrument in your opinion?

Another question for the european members, any recommendations for valve oil to the 983, that is easily available in europe?

best regards
T

Historically, the Wick 3 (older horns, smaller receiver) or 3L (newer horns, "American" size receivers) were the traditional mouthpieces for a Besson Eb comp. Many players also used a Bach 24AW, which is similar in cup geometry, but with the wide rim players either love or hate.

That said, The Wick 2L is a tad wider at the rim than a 3/3L, and a tad different in cup geometry, based on an old Kosicup design. Many players also use the 2L on an Eb comp. You can find more threads discussing this particular combination at the brassband forum, themouthpiece.com .

If you like a Wick 2L, and it plays well for you on a Besson Eb comp, then by all means continue to use it and enjoy your new tuba!
