Tuba Tuesday: W. Meinl, B flat tenor tuba, 5 rotary, ca. 1946-1950

Post by bisontuba »

This Tuba Tuesday, the 100th post, the Museum features a W. Meinl, B flat tenor tuba, 5 rotary, ca. 1946-1950.

Serial #: 718

Bell Diameter is 11 5/8,” bores are .570″, 1-2; .610″, 3-5, and the height is 28.0.”

“W. MEINL / WESTON / A DIVISION / OF GETZEN” on bell. “718” on second valve casing. There is a strong speculation that the bell was originally designed for an oval instrument due to the diagonal bell engraving. Also notable for the dependant fifth valve, operating off the fourth valve tubing.

{ MJ note: I doubt this is 1946-50 as I do not believe the Getzen / Meinl Weston partnership had been established. When the Getzen company took over the distribution of Meinl-Weston in the USA in the mid 1960’s, they added that sub-title. Although the Wenzel Meinl GmbH was never a department of the Getzen company, [Meinl-Weston was merely one of the products which they distributed] the synergies and friendship between the two companies lasted for a time, especially with Wm 'Bill' Bell having M/W produce a copy of his King CC tuba. Don Harry has many legendary stories of driving Bill Bell with Bell delivering his M/W Bell tubas to folks...}.

It's similar to but - with significant differences - earlier than the one that I had.
