Has it been done?
I am borrowing a lovely satin silver BBb Contempora from approx. 1956 (pre-Abilene).
On a lark I gave it a toot without the recording bell and it played pretty solidly in B. I don't have an upright bell, but those things are loooong; seems like it wouldn't be too too hard to convert one to C with a bell swap. The main slide looks like it has room to trim a bit of length off too, and perhaps even accommodate a fifth valve.
I'm not skilled enough to do this, but just wondering how the result would end up.
