What are the caps over the rotor linkages for?

I had a Miraphone 188 with "Presto" valves like these.

I don't remember why there was a cap like that over the linkage, but you could adjust the tension of the spring with the screws to the right of the paddles.

I think they phased these out by the late nineties or early aughts.

IMO they worked well but were a bit overengineered and were sort of a solution in search of a problem.

I also don't think this is a 187. 187s have a right-angle exit tube after the valve section and before the tuning slide, kinda like a 188. This one has the curvy tube as seen in the 186 BBb.
