Happy Tuba Tuesday. Today, the Museum features a Böhm and Meinl, CC tuba, 4 piston, ca.1984.

Bell Diameter is 20” and Bore Size is .750….the height is 38”. Serial # is 8460.

“BÖHM & MEINL / GEBRETSRIED / MADE IN W. GERMANY / 5520C” on bell.

I do wonder why this one is in the museum. I understand that it’s a bit of a rarity, but it’s certainly not *too* old comparatively.

Is this the newest horn in the collection?

Chuck Jackson had one of these when we were at the SOM at Little Creek in early '86. I loved it and wanted one of my own, but — unfortunately for me — that never happened. His was a really good example, too. The Nirschl-made valves were superb. (I think this tuba was made before Nirschl bought out B&M.)

That's a good question, and I didn't specifically ask Vince when I was there last year.

But I do remember that there is a Cerveny piggy which is also from the mid 80s. Pretty sure Vince said they were both bought and added to the collection without being used hardly at all.

I'm happy with its inclusion. It has the Marzan style MTS for tuning as you play.

I had one of these in silver. Nice tuba, but not a whole lot different from the 188 I had at the time, at least in terms of playability.

I'm not one to tell someone what they should do with their stuff, but (again) many of these instruments probably need to be played, rather than collecting dust...

...and only the goofballs and worn-outs (yes?) should hang from wires and sit on stands.

(If I'm remembering correctly, those factory-cut-to-C ones presented some challenges.)

Yes they did
Perhaps the least favorite tuba I ever owned. GREAT sound on some notes, but everything just felt a little "off". Not to mention the weird ergonomics. One of the few tubas I genuinely did not enjoy playing. It LOOKS like it would be a great horn, but unfortunately mine wasn't.
IMHO within this generation:
BBb > CC
Rotary > Piston

I figure that if you own it then it is yours to do whatever you want to do with it. And if it bothers others they are free to purchase it if you can agree on a price. I know Vince sells stuff from time to time.

and (guess what?) I've not called them, and I've not told them what to do with their stuff...

...but of what interest (to viewers of tuba oddities) is (just as an example) a displayed 1960's 5-rotor 186 B-flat or C in good condition with good rotors?

I also sometimes probably need to remind myself that some people just like to "have" things...things that they don't use.
