Worst...packaging...job...ever!

So incredibly upset today! Bought a Miraphone 186 on eBay a couple weeks back (granted, it was a budget tuba for a steal of a price, so already a few imperfections). It arrived today in a VERY interesting condition. Half the box didn't have packing material, and the horn just flopped all over inside.
Bell wrecked...rotors don't function well (can see where they were banging around on the inside of the box)...worst packaging job I've ever seen.
Giving the guy an opportunity to make it right before opening up an eBay/PayPal dispute. Should be an easy one to win.
Any doozies you guys/gals want to share?

Ouch, what a waste of a good horn.
Amazing how people think, like that bubble wrap would have made any difference.
Sad to see!

Could see the horn through the bubble wrap...yeah, that thin of a layer doesn't do a thing.

Make sure you save the pics from the ebay listing for "before" evidence

Did that as well. New seller to eBay (maybe that alone should have deterred me)...hopefully he has the integrity to make it right.

If there was ever a need for this emoji, here it is...
So sorry this happened to you! Had a Rudy Meinl get crunched by terrible packaging about 6 years ago. The sinking feeling of opening a box like that...

One of those situations where I opened the box and immediately thought..."uh oh" and snapped photos even before taking it out of the box.

Are you shooting for a refund and return, or a settlement for money for repair?

Settlement money for repair would be preferable. If I get no response (which is quite possible), I will need to go the eBay/PayPal dispute route...not sure what that all entails really (return/refund then?).

Get a refund.
The hard thing about settlement money is determining the cost to get it repaired to the condition before shipping... Which is unknown to you firsthand. Invariably, the condition after repairs here will be a repaired tuba... more expensive than just attaining a pre-shipping level of damage
Or another way, if you are walking down the street eating an apple, and are halfway through the apple... And someone takes your apple and throws it away... They owe you half of an apple. Not a whole apple.

Received a tuba via US Mail once that had been wrapped in 1" bubble wrap, 3 or four layers thick, and taped.
No box

If the seller doesn’t make it right, PayPal will.
In fact, if it had arrived in pristine condition and you wanted some “walking around money”, you could throw it down a flight of steps and PayPal would STILL make it right.
Obviously not the situation in this case, but overall it’s NOT a great time to be an eBay seller. Good luck with the claim. I’m sure they’ll get you squared up.

So you have a choice to take a refund or return or is that a seller option? If you take a refund do you have to pay for the return? Never been in that situation.
I'm not sure how eBay (or PayPal?) handles it. Because yes, if you get your money back, you don't also get to keep the tuba. I'd expect that shipping costs for the return are covered. The idea is to be "made whole." So if you were wronged by seller negligence, you shouldn't be out because of that.
When my Rudy Meinl was busted up in transit, it was because the seller took it to a UPS store and had them pack and ship it... and they did a poor job of it. I contacted a repairman (I think Lee Stofer?) to get a price quote for repairing the damage, and provided it to UPS. They sent an inspector to my apartment to check out the packaging and the damage (took 2 weeks to wait for them to come out, took about 45 seconds to do the inspection). A few weeks later, I received a check in the mail for the full amount of the repair quote.
Matt Walters did the repair work (plus some), and did an amazing job. He said the bell wasn't quite toast, but could have stood to be repaired. The bell is weakened, but should be fine as long as an adult is careful with it, and doesn't stand it on its bell too often. I had zero problems with it, and neither did the next owner of it. It was a lovely tuba, I probably should have kept it!

I’m sure it ‘could’ be repaired, but that kranz certainly will complicate things.

I bought a tuba once where I started describing how I wanted it packed, but the sender said not to worry, it comes with a case. It arrived with no packing materials in a paper-thin nylon bag. It was very dented.
