The Cowboys - arr. Curnow (John Williams) BAND tuba part

Post by bloke »

I don't even know if this is a band arrangement or an orchestra part. It says "TUBA" at the top. (I guess it's really old school for band parts to say "Basses" at the top, these days.)

A kid who knows who I am sent me a Facebook message with a phone pic of a copy of his part all wrinkled and all written over with him trying to wig out the rhythms, but it's so written on and so wrinkled that it's almost impossible to read. I think he's been freaking out over trying to figure out how to play his part (as the stuff he's written all over the part indicates that its a bit beyond him). I told him that I would help him with it if he met me at the hall after a dress rehearsal on April Fool's Day. If anyone knows whether this is a band or orchestra part and has a clean copy of the part, it sure would be nice if they would scan it and send it to my email address, so I can print it out and be able to read it and help him with the music, because his part's a mess.

...OK...quick investigation tells me it's a BAND arrangement...so - if any of you band directors have this in your library - a pdf scan of a clean part would be appreciated, so I can teach him with a readable part, and (also) show him how he can mark music without screwing it all up.

I am about 90% sure that's the band part.

I'm also 90% sure this is a Bloke Troll. But it's a great part. I'd REALLY love to play this again before the Grim Reaper catches up with me.

I've already asked him to ask for another copy of the part out of the spares - or out of a spare folder...but - if there are none - I'm working this angle to get one anyway.

It looks like ink, doesn't it?

Most here know that I don't "do" lessons, but what I will do is "help".

Some stuff is ink, but it looks like the majority of circles on the staff are pencil.

I played this in my first "top band" college wind ensemble concert, so I have some fond memories of this piece.

In a pinch you can download this for the cost of three of your gas station coffees and print it out at home:

That's helpful. >>> Thanks <<<. :smilie8:
Though negligible money, I'll let the person - who's reaching out - go to the trouble of paying/downloading/printing the part.
I'm willing to help, but I'm not willing to spoon-feed, and - (with peeps on fb) it's really easy to send messages to people like me, but it's yet another thing for them to be proactive. I think "finding out if they're even willing to take care of printing out a part" would be a great test as to whether I should invest my time helping them.

The brass band arrangement is a lot of fun. We played it at the us open in 2005 and finished pretty well for once in a contest.

I played that version (on euphonium) in my senior year of high school - it has a ripping euphonium part!
I mostly play the slidey thing.

I love this piece although I haven't had occasion to play it in an ensemble yet. They should have a lot of fun with this.

yeah...I call 'em what they are...and most all days are fools' days, yes?

I'll help someone out for ~a~ day (maybe even HELP them dig a trench...??) but I'm not offering myself up for hire as a fool-time trench-digger...and certainly not within some friggin' million-employee national "alliance" of mortar-bored 'trench diggers.

tofu wrote: Fri Mar 24, 2023 12:00 am Yeah that looks to be the band part. We've played it a couple times including with Curnow himself conducting. Don't recall if that was when it first got released. It's a fun band piece - not really that difficult - I'd think a decent HS wind ensemble would have no problem.
Jim Curnow was working at Asbury University in KY while I was going to the University of Kentucky, a stone's throw away. We always ended up performing a lot of his music both at UK and in the Lexington Brass Band. He was close friends with Skip Gray and Jim did a lot of unpublished arrangements for the tuba ensemble that were a ton of fun. I've always admired his work. I believe he still lives in the area.
