Re: Martin Mammoth vs. Fat Bastard
Not many 4v floating around, particularly with the upright bell. Nice!

Some old Yorks, Martins, and perhaps a King rotary valved CC
Re: Martin Mammoth vs. Fat Bastard
I'm pretty sure that silver Martin is currently in the For Sale section. Looks like a winner. Ed

Re: Martin Mammoth vs. Fat Bastard
The Martin (the best I can manage to weigh it) appears to weigh 30.0 lbs.
ie. This is the type of tuba that quite a few people (those people who believe they can accurately estimate the weight of tubas by picking them up) might claim weighs forty or fifty pounds.
(It IS heavy, but only 30 lbs. heavy.)

Re: Martin Mammoth vs. Fat Bastard
OK...It may not be quite as shiny as when it was handed off to me, because - well - I've been handling it an awful lot...
...but most all of the dents, dinks, and creases are gone, and the pistons have now been vented.
Since the bottom bow cap doesn't ever appear to have been squashed (ie. "well-preserved"), I made the assumption that someone removed the bottom bow cap RIB for the sake of comfort, and - thus - I did not replace it.
If it is for sale (??), I would describe the surface condition of the pistons' plating and their fit to their casings as "remarkably good".
This is a former Marine Band tuba, and a gold wash bell interior.

Re: Martin Mammoth vs. Fat Bastard
Wow! Thanks!
To clarify, this tuba is the same one as the one for sale (mine). My son (in Los Angeles, not Texas) posted it for me. The tuba and I will be back in DC soon. When my employer sent me to Western TN, I thought it was a golden opportunity to ask bloke to work on my equipment. I could have had local technicians do it, but I know bloke's level of TLC. Plus, it was an excuse to meet and chat. Well worth the drive.

Re: Martin Mammoth vs. Fat Bastard
Great looking horns! I propose a new term- Big A** Bb's, BABs, BABbs or the like.
If anyone has both a giant American Bb and a giant German Bb (traditional style stovepipe) and posted a comparison video, I'd happily watch and upvote it.

What's his name (the guy that makes the crazy faces) has a few videos of a Rudy 5/4 BBb vs Nirschl 6/4 CC.Bob Kolada wrote: Mon Apr 10, 2023 5:52 pm Great looking horns! I propose a new term- Big A** Bb's, BABs, BABbs or the like.

I don’t think it would be easy to capture the difference in a recording in my living room. I think the main difference is how they project.Bob Kolada wrote:Great looking horns! I propose a new term- Big A** Bb's, BABs, BABbs or the like.

I’d make the recording—I don’t have a FatBastard but I do have a Holton BB-345 and a Hirsbrunner HBS-193 kaiser—but I’m afraid the limitations of the operator would cause the proponents of one or the other to cry foul.
My impression is that the 193 gets off the stage better in a dead hall, but the 345 makes a deeper floor of sound in a resonant hall.
