I remember Howard Johnson's 4+2 Mahillon F. It seemed like a a great layout, but it had some intonation concerns.
As for the French C: while Mahillon was a relatively "early adopter" of the French C concept, I question the build quality. Look at the 2nd valve slide (on OP's photo). Doesn't it look flattened/crimped?
