I'm making plans to be there. Who else is thinking of going?
Gee, I wonder if I'll bump into Sean or Farah?

We'll be there. Always look forward to this show and the unexpected reunions that seem to happen. Great opportunity for players of all levels to play, listen, and shop tax-free. If anyone is on the fence about attending, do it! No fees to attend other than transportation, lodging, and food, which can be pricey.

What's the consensus on folks (not vendors) selling their own horns? Is there a space to try them out that isn't the elephant room?
I have a couple I'd like to bring, but don't know how I'd go about managing the logistics.

Below is NOT to say that I'm some super busy performing musician. I'm not. I probably work on average 5 or 6 days a month playing music, and that's about it... but since engagements sort of come to a head in December, January is always a nearly completely dark month, there must be something about February or the very end of January which prompts churches and other places to resume hiring musicians...
...and nearly every time I commit to one of these Army conferences - which I REALLY enjoy attending and displaying - I end up getting offered some job - either on the same days, the Sunday morning after, or some such, and it's usually something that pays pretty good, so that adds to the cost of going, and with the fuel cost now doubled. Quite candidly, I've also raised my repair prices to attempt to somewhat compensate for most everything I buy costing twice as much, so if I'm gone Thursday through Sunday, burn a whole bunch of gas, pay a fee, possibly turn down a pretty good church gig, don't do any repair work over those days, and only make a few hundred dollars profit on maybe a tuba (as our markups are very low) and a few mouthpieces, that's sort of rough.
The obvious advantage is that I get to see a whole bunch of people who have become my friends, as well as an opportunity to meet a bunch of new friends. I also stay with my brother, and it's great to visit with him... He's in amazingly good health, but he is now an octogenerian.
(warning: double negative) I'm not saying here is that it is not worth going to, but what I am saying is that I'm conflicted each time I go. I would also like to say how kind the people are who host it, and how incredibly kind some other vendors and attendees have been in the past helping us pack up at the end...It's just amazing.

I want to go this year but still have NO IDEA where it is held. If somebody told me recently I forgot that already. Is there a blog somewhere about accommodations and where to eat etc.?

It is held every year at the Army base at Fort Myer in Arlington, VA.

Thanks. Either I am blind or that entire web site does not have a location.

I’ll probably pop in for a look, a concert and lunch at the bowling alley.

Well, it seems like nobody's bumping into them on the other site.
The mods look to be pretty hands off on that site as a whole. One hasn't logged in in nearly a year, and Sean hasn't said ANYTHING in nearly FOUR years. I wonder how much ad rev they're getting with the slower site now?

Booked my flight! Flying into Dulles thus time and taking the silver line almost the doorstep of fort Myer. (actually a former student that is in the army band will pick me up the station)
I'm usually an American Airlines or delta guy, but united was less than half the cost. I'll give them a try
I'm arriving Friday the 2nd by noon
See you then!

Sean is IN the army band. Farah is in the navy band, less likely she will be around

Yeah, just a bad attempt at humor. But yeah, they're not even logging into Tubenet anymore. They're going months between visits at this point.

Just to be clear, are all the vendors tax-free?

I have the choice of going to the trombone event or the tuba event. For anyone who has been to both, which do you prefer? I can't imagine listening to tubas for several days straight would be a lot of fun in itself. Do they have other groups there? Do they tolerate trombone players? Kind of on the fence.
