Help! Fixing Baritone Horn bent valve stem!

Post by BariTom »

Hi everyone!

Please forgive me dropping into your forum and just immediately asking for help. I'm trying to support my daughter in her music journey and need some emergency assistance from knowledgeable people (I have no idea).

My daughter has been learning the Baritone Horn for a year now, and agreed to do a demo at her new school assembly tomorrow, but my wife has damaged the instrument oiling the stuck 'keys'.

I _think_ this is a Bariton Horn (we just call it 'Bariton' in German), and I _think_ the 'keys' are rotary valves with stems? I've tried Googling a solution without much success.

Essentially my question is: Can I just bend this bent 'stem' back into position? Or can someone help me with the terminology for searching?

I've included a few photos and a video of the issue. The keys were stuck and my wife pushed too hard, and seemingly bent a stem and it now collides with one of the support arms.

Am I doomed?

I would really appreciate any advice or even a nudge in the right direction! I am not musical, and want to give my daughter the best chance of success!

Thanks in advance!

Bend it back with pliers with no teeth or with regular pliers and a rag to protect that has been bent.

Terminology is dangerous.

The only part which "We Repair Technicians" :smilie7: refer to as a "stem" is the part that you can't see - which is part of the rotor body itself.

------------------------------------------

When rotors are stuck with scale/lime or maybe just "spit stuck", the lever assembly and thrust arm are way too delicate to use as crowbars.
The torque needs to go to the rotor itself, BUT... it's much safer (compared to turning the rotor ITSELF (with pliers-and-rag) to completely REMOVE and REINSTALL frozen rotors.

Hi @bloke ,

Thank you so much for your help! This was helpful - I wasn't sure if just bending it back was going to cause more damage. I did as you suggest, and it worked well. She managed to do her show!

Appreciate you taking the time! Thanks!
