my emotional support alligator lost his MAGA cap, so I would appreciate it if - anyone sees it - they would contact me.

1930 satin silver King sousaphone with 1960 satin silver bell

Post by bloke »

The finish is quite worn, but I'm really going to pick over it - even more than I already have - and put it in really good condition as far as dent removal, slides, everything. Yes, the pistons and casings are 93 years old, but they are actually quite fine. I have two different hard cases that I can offer. One is a squeeze-tight fit (Holton case from the '50's), but it's possibly small enough to finagle into a car - no guarantees, and the other is a regular size wood case. I'm sticking a poll up here to see if anyone might be interested in the $3,000 range. The thing weighs 30 lb. This is NOT one of those paper-thin/adulterated things made in the last thirty years. All four upper bows are slides. If there isn't interest - according to the poll, I'll stick it on Facebook Marketplace or on Frankentuba on Facebook.

This - truth be told - is my ideal sousaphone, but I think I'm going to hold out for a King fiberglass, from back when they were actually made of fiberglass. It won't sound as good, but the intonation will still be the excellent King intonation, and I won't have to get my left shoulder muscle in condition every time I'm suddenly called to play it. I used it to play The Star-Spangled Banner in a symphony orchestra opening concert this year, and the intonation was every bit as good as my Miraphone 98 would have been - even though it only has three valves. There's just something about King sousaphones and their remarkably good intonation...

Obviously, both the body and bell are H.N. White era.
The lower mouthpipe and neck are the original setup, so I used Jupiter sousaphone bracing on the neck receiver, as it is the same style as original King bracing. I also took pains to put the Jupiter bracing system on there very neatly and symmetrically.

I'd appreciate it if only those who are thinking of buying a sousaphone would respond to the poll, but I guess I'll put at least one dumb answer - for people who like to participate in polls in which they are not interested. :smilie7:

If I get at least one or a few positive responses to the poll, I'll get it raised up to even better condition that it's in now, and stick up some pictures. I've got to get through a few more customer things, but - if there are some positive anonymous responses - I'll go to this instrument next after those things.

I think i saw a MAGA hat once. Maybe it was the alligator's?

Actually... i'm not sure it would have fit an alligator though...

Don't the have... rather flat heads? Need a chin strap or something.

That said... i like King sousaphones, at least the few times i have played them. And heard them. And it would cheer me up to know one more is out there.

If this plays anything like my King H.N. White sousaphone, then someone will be over the moon happy with it. I love mine, and I regularly get unsolicited (but welcome) comments on how amazing it sounds.

I have some big customer projects to do, but I think I'd like to get this thing cleaned up picked over and sold someone, even though I'd really like to keep it.

Again, I think I'll settle for fiberglass.

What's the bell diameter on your's? The one on mine is fairly small by modern sousaphone standards. It really focuses the sound, aka it's not "woofy" like most other sousas.

This is a regular 26 inch. All the plating is worn, but there's apparently a thin layer of gold wash on this one.

It's a very thick wall bell, and it's one of those where the flare and the elbow are brazed together and not lead soldered.

The bell dates to 1960 - compared to the body, which dates to 1930.
