Looking at it from the front I thought, "Oh, that's not too bad. I've certainly seen worse. Those creases should come out, and there's obviously some denting on the bottom bow."

Then I looked at the back of the bell!

True story. But the price is pretty good. With a bit of work, it would look marginally decent. THose don't come up for sale too often. If I had a gap in the stables for that size horn, I'd consider it (and its within driving distance so I could play it prior to money changing hands).

@LeMark if you buy it, I’d go pick it up and then ship it to you.

@bloke if you buy it, I’ll go pick it up and ship the case to you.

Jason is as usual offering to be super generous either with his time or with his stuff, but shipping a tuba case from the west coast to here costs about as much as some of the clearance prices on brand new cases.

Yeah, but in this case, after you paid for it and I shipped the case, I'd get to keep the tuba.

I'll even split the cost of shipping with you.

Don't worry, I caught your joke.

The real answer is, if Joe buys it, keep the tuba and send the case to me. And then I'll sell the case to Joe. Everybody wins!

I didn't look closely... besides the bell (and thumb ring ) what else is wrong?

Because you can order a new bell from M'phone, and although it won't be cheap, if the rest of the tuba is in good shape, you could maybe sort of break even on this tuba. They are uncommon, so for someone -- not me -- it might be a fun project to pursue.

Then again, if I wanted one of these and had the money, I'd order a new 5-valve version, because it looks cool and the 5th valve is a bit ridiculous.

If I hadn't literally just bought a big BBb two days ago, I woukd seriously be interested in this.

I like the big cerveny I picked up, but this is far more of a do it all tuba

I'm too close to being sick - right now - to catch onto clever banter.

Today...I actually did some (intensive, but only two hours) of work...(see repair forum).
At least (unlike the last two days) I didn't stay in the (southern expression) "sick bed".

I'm still looking for the smallest possible (hopefully Jacob Winter good condition) case that will accommodate a 16-1/2" bell F B&S F tuba...

..perhaps a well-preserved Cerveny 681 case...(??) as that NEMC place (decades ago) supplied those tubas with Winter cases.

I have a REALLY NICE Winter case - which would fit an Alexander 15"-bell F tuba - which I might trade but (actually) I have a Bohemian F tuba (project) that could use that case.

The 289 has such a short leadpipe, I wonder how it plays/sounds? IIRC, it's not a small tuba (not huge, but bigger than a 186, and I think a larger bell diameter than a 187). I forget and I'm too lazy to look it up again!

I'd be interested in trying one, but I doubt one will show up here in the great plains.

I looked it up and it was marketed as a 5/4 instrument.

I would like to see someone look up the bell diameters, size the two pictures proportionally, and put them side-by-side - in regards to a 289 and a 191.
