This is an older student level 3/4-size three-valve BB-flat tuba made by C. G. Conn in Elkhart, Indiana in approximately 1968 (s/n L81XXX). No mouthpiece is included, and neither is the stand shown in the pictures. I can supply a student level Standard/American shank 24AW mouthpiece in like new condition for $20. The storage stand can also be can be purchased separately.
Okay, let's get the obvious out of the way: this little fella isn't going to win any beauty contests. It has dents, scrapes, dings and signs of multiple prior repairs (see pictures). The lacquer finish is approximately 50% intact. It has not had an easy life and would surely appreciate a good home and proper care.
Mechanically the horn is working well, and it is structurally sound. All the slides pull (some easier than others), and the valves operate smoothly with decent compression considering their age. This tuba has recently been professionally serviced, supplied with new valve felts and springs, and thoroughly cleaned inside and out.
Plays nicely with a full sound for a smaller tuba. The bell, bell throat and bottom bow are generously proportioned for a 3/4-size tuba, compared to some other models. This would be ideal for a student at-home practice horn or for anyone who needs a smaller, more compact lightweight horn (older folks, smaller folks, maybe doublers) for amateur or student level playing.
Here is what Conn had to say about this model in a 1971 catalog:
"10J BBb Upright Tuba- Most popular lightweight tuba for school band use. Young students find it easier to "fill," and can produce a full tone right from the start. Highly responsive and balanced in all registers.
-
Three valves. Lustre-Conn finish over polished brass. Cylindrical Bore 0.695" Bell up. Bell Diameter 18". Weight 15 lbs., 12 oz."
Thanks for looking. Happy Holidays.
