I’m getting back out of the tuba business, so I’m selling things off that have mainly been sitting. Try as I might, my chops won’t get back together and having an instrument like this sit idle is silly. Note: my 4/4 will be listed for sale soon as well.

This is a large 6/4 CC tuba. It is a heavy tuba by design with a tone ring in the bell and reinforced bottom bow.

This is a “small valve” Meinl Weston tuba, which means it’s roughly 30 years old. It’s in overall good condition with evidence of prior work that was well done. It could use some small dent work for pesky little pings here and there if desired. The leadpipe is in good order.

2165s of this vintage also included an additional section of tubing to insert into the main tuning slide loop to put the instrument into the key of Bb. This will be included in the sale and is in nearly unused condition.

Also included are Martin Wilk “MAW” valves. These remove the “bumps” in the valves to allow for smoother flow of air and sound. They are also lightweight with the Wilk stems and caps. With the valve springs used, the valve action of this tuba is extremely light and fast, giving it a very nimble feeling despite being a large tuba. The original Meinl Weston valves are also included.

Both a hard case and gig bag will be included. The hard case is MTS. It’s in usable condition. The soft rubber has stripped from the wheels but it still rolls fine. Handles and hardware are in good shape. There’s a small cushion included to fill some gap at the bottom bow. The gig bag is essentially brand new and has never left my house. It was made by Superfine and is an excellent top loading bag.

Here are photos I took today (12/3/2023) of the tuba and what’s included:

Price: $11,500 for everything. I’m not in a position where I need to sell, so I’m looking for reasonable offers within range. I can wait until the right person and offer comes along. If it sits too long it’ll probably just make its way to Dillon Music and be on consignment there.

Location: Rhode Island. I can drive a couple of hours to meet, so consider about a 180 mile radius from Providence as a max distance for me. I’m not willing to ship as there don’t seem to be good options anymore and I don’t want the hassel of broken tubas and bad feelings.

For now I’m just listing this here. I’d rather not push to Facebook.

Contact me via PM. Thank you!

Bump! After @arpthark stopped by yesterday I did noodle around on this horn a bit for fun. So much sound so easily!

Was just about to write my glowing recommendation. 😉

This is a fantastic horn, such a powerful low end. I managed to even make my way through a couple Big Tuba excerpts without embarrassing myself too badly in front of Matt.

I think it's impossible to overblow. And such light and easy valves, super smooth.

I had a great time and was so grateful for Matt hosting me and humoring me as a tire kicker.

When Matt lists his Conn/Walters build for sale, I hope people line up around the block because that is the finest 4/4 CC I have played.

That size valve is much better, and those aux. valves must be incredibly light.

The only lighter valves than those are genuine "long stroke" York valves.

My college has one of these that I’ve been playing on for a while. It’s a really good sound and tone. My impression though, and this could be just because it’s older and also a school horn, is that some notes can be hard to tune and the low G is hard to slot. Otherwise it’s a really nibble and easy to play horn for its size. Gorgeous sound did I mention??

Bumping this to the top.

Open to negotiations.

Regarding the low register and slotting/stability, I think the MAW valves help tremendously there. The low register is open and free blowing, which is not consistent across the examples of 2165s I’ve played in the past.

Bump. I’ll probably list this on Facebook soon, as much as I don’t want to do so.

Feel free to reach out and ask questions.

Congrats to all! This is a great tuba -- glad to have tooted around on it a bit before Matt moved it on.

Likewise! It’s always fun to talk tuba at Dillon Music.
