Fabricating replacement maple bassoon long joint busted-off tenons (and counter-boring them into the joints) isn't in our day-to-day wheelhouse, but a local school (that gives is a BUNCH of business, and buys a good bit of "2-1/2 - for - the - price - of - one" JP equipment) ended up with this situation at the end of their Christmas concert. With a customer like that, you just don't want them going ANYwhere else for anyTHING, so (just like the first time someone asked me if I could play harmony trumpet in a Klezmer band - reading off a head chart) I said, "S-U-R-E...We'll take care of that for you right away...NO PROBLEM..."
Being that (six inches of snow) it's perfect "try-doing-something-new" weather), we tackled this job, and ended up with this result.
again:
With special thanks to @MikeMason, the brass cap (formed over the tip end of a tenor saxophone neck expander - with the assistance of a Tractor Supply 1-1/2" hose clamp), ended up being donated from a model 600 "F tuba shaped object" which he sold to us several years ago, and from which I've picked off all sorts of misc. parts. (This particular part was cut out of the main slide dogleg - about a half inch from the large end.
most importantly:
It fits snugly into the boot joint (without any metal-to-metal scuffing) !
pattern: (as the busted-off tenon was G-O-N-E gone).
We happened to have FIVE of this same make/model of bassoon (awaiting restoration and sale) on one of Mrs. bloke's shelves
(...old common-make German bassoon)
bloke "...We're NOT suggesting that you send ANY of these to us to do for you..."
with thanks to Mike Mason, and speaking of crappy lathes...
