MW 2155

Hi all,

I recently bought the MW 2155 that was at Dillon Music. I will try to throw a couple pictures up later. So far, I really love it. Matt said it was one of the good ones, and he wasn't kidding. Great low register, awesome pitch, nice projection, and just overall a handsome tuba. It is a little larger than the DS I have been playing (the DS will likely be posted for sale soon). Can't wait to hear the new horn in a bigger space next week!

I'm sure I have played more than a thousand tubas over the years, but that particular tuba made a great impression on me when it was new some 20 years ago and playing it again, I was right.

I am so glad that 2155s found a new home where it will be appreciated for the special tuba it is.

Particularly the 2157 versions I find to be gems, whether originally sold by Dillon Music - factory set up with the superior mouthpipe dimensions of the 57, or a 55 which has been aftermarketed into a 57.

The Miraphone 188 deserves all the admiration that it gets - as a sort of almost-just-right large-enough tuba built in C. Not many people have played the 2157 model, but (dare I make such a broad statement?) this model is superior to the 188 in playing characteristics, and bringing this model back would benefit a great many players, as it also easily out-plays some of the current similarly-sized models produced by the same manufacturer.

To further clarify my remarks about how great the 2157 model is/was, let me express my preference of whether I like pistons or rotors better: "whatever".

I knew a guy who was kind of a goofus who had one of these and I wasn't impressed at the time (likely my own biases).

I've since gotten to play lots of non-goofused 2155s and found them to be REALLY nice, but none on the market when I was in the market. Pauvog, I hope your new horn is a source of joy. If Matt W. says it's good, it's gotta be good!

I owned a 2155 for a short time. It was in perfect dent-free scratch-free condition, would have passed for absolute new, and I got it for a stupid stupid low price from its original owner. I sold it to a military band in French speaking Canada, and more than doubled my money. I spent some time going back and forth trying to decide whether or not to keep it, and these are redundant remarks I know... but - had I kept it - the very first thing I would have done would have been to have marred its cosmetics by converting it to a 2157, so I'm not one who sings the praises of the 2155, but absolutely sing the prices of the 2157.
...I just felt like I needed to clarify that.
