Advice on tuba purchase...

Went to visit a local tuba paler/seller today.
Has an older somewhat used Yamaha YBB201SS for sale at 2k w/ new case and mouthpiece. Very nice and tuba-wise individual.
Can pay and pick up.
Any thoughts or advice?

The 4 valve version, the YBB-321 can be had for similar money in decent shape if you’re patient.
That being said, I wouldn’t buy either one, as I’m not a fan of that horn.

If you think you like those tubas, look for a decades-old UK-made BESSON (from which the Yamaha was copied) with either three or four COMPENSATING valves.
Find one that is not mechanically worn.
- better tuba (even with regular valves)
- better tuning (with compensating valves)

This is likely to be an unpopular opinion, but if you like the horn, and like the way it sounds, and the way you sound playing it, get it! 2k really isn’t much to pay for a working tuba.

I'd say keep looking. If your heart's set on a YBB201 then they can be had cheaper. Consider an Olds 099.
