This is actually quite a good opportunity for somebody who plays reasonably well and would like a steady and secure income from playing. The (UK) Nationality criteria has some flexibility (like open to Commonwealth Citizens) and you don’t need a music degree to sign up …. but they’re expecting a moderately high level of playing skill that will be tested by the RAF before signing up. Pay and ongoing education can be quite good and then there are some perks like board and lodging and international travel (including to places of interest).

I don’t know anyone who plays in the RAF band but I do know ex-military players and I do know a local young man who is in an Army Band playing Cornet. For him life as an Army musician has been a good choice, he seems happy and is earning a reasonable sum for doing what he enjoys. He’s not a graduate, but had the right mix of skills to enable him to sign-up and after that the forces train you well.

IIRC the OP was a military musician and is now in civvy street.
