Thank you to all who offered advice - the tuba has been sold.

All of the slides are free, and the valves operate smoothly.
I have no idea of value, getting rid of it without underselling too much is my goal.
I'm three hours away from any kind of used instrument store, and I'd like to know the best way to sell this tuba.

we get a LOT of sellers who come on here to try to sell a tuba with their first post, and almost all of them are fraud. I usually remind people to proceed with caution.

the difference is most of them delete and run when confronted, so thank you for editing your post and finding out more information.

I deal with online scammers daily - I wish they'd take a day off now and then.
Maybe there's someone within a few hours of me interested in the tuba.

^ A vintage, good-condition B&S-made Gerhard Schneider 4-rotor BBb. Prolly $2,000+ Add $500 if you have a good hard case to go with it.

Your biggest problem is going to be having to ship it because it will be difficult to find someone local who wants it.

Depending on its size, which I "assume" is too big to go in a Uhaul Grand Wardrobe box, spend some time researching how to ship a very fragile item without having the carrier destroy it. You may be surprised at the cost.

Also I'd advise using craigslist in the nearest population centers that have potential buyers, and offer to drive to meet the buyer for instrument transfer. Of course --- they may then change their mind after playing it, but that is a chance you take when selling.

I like those a lot, but don't need one. The condition looks to be pretty good. If it actually is pretty good and if someone offered me one way too cheap compared to its value, I probably hold on to it for a while and have some fun with it before immediately thinking about selling it.
Something particularly interesting about them is how well focused the overtones remain all the way up to the 24th partial, which would be the B-flat which sits in the middle of the treble clef. I believe a lot of people refer to this characteristic as "slotting"...

The older these are, the better they seem to play - as long as the rotors aren't worn out.

The first one I ever purchased was from Bulgaria - or some such a place - and I believe I paid about $200 plus maybe another $100 shipping. It was beat up, but played beautifully. I eventually straightened it out shined it up, shot some lacquer on it, installed some replacement linkage, and sold it to a nearby High School.

The bell is not too huge, so I’m guessing it fits in a UHaul Grand Wardrobe. Be sure to pack it with enough padding (bubble wrap, peanuts, stuff that cushions but holds it shape well) that it doesn’t shift around in the box, and protect the bell.

It might be worth calling some stores in Sacramento to see about a consignment. It might be worth a few hours drive one weekend to bit have to deal with low-ballers, lookie-lous, and no shows at your house.
