Does anyone here happen to know what mouthpiece shank size is needed for the Willson 2704 euphonium (4 valve, non-compensating)?

Tenor? Euro mid-sized euph? Bass?

I'm thinking I remember that they are large shank. I sold a like new used one - perhaps a year ago - that I sold new to the same person - probably 35 years ago. (I sold a few of those way back when they were fairly inexpensive, but sort of quit selling them when I realized that the second circuits were way too long and the fourth circuits were way too long - as some sort of attempt to compromise, rather than compensate.)

Did you or somebody you know purchase that distressed one on eBay from the place in Grand Rapids?

I did not buy one, eBay or elsewhere, but I have a 321 that needs a leadpipe and receiver (they’re missing altogether) and the 2704 for sale here got me (idly?) wondering.

Depending on what’s beneath the tape and in-hand condition, $635 could be a good buy.

I’ve been now told that the receiver is a tweener, at least it is on a friend’s 2704. He says it’s either a slightly large Euro euph shank or a slightly small bass shank. So, that’s different…

That may be their particular instrument, but not what I remember, and I'm pretty good about remembering exceptions.

An example of an exception are the California Olds standard shank trombone mouthpieces along with the instruments they made to fit them. I think I'd call those "small" shank, because they were a bit smaller than standard shank.

Some large shank mouthpieces historically were a little bit larger than large shank. I found Schilke to be one of those and a lot of people have purchased their 51D to use to play euphoniums. I'm not trying to guess at what's going on with your friend, but I'm offering a possibility. (I tend to use the Bach sizes as reference sizes, because they are the most common of all makes.)

I borrowed that 2704 for a couple of pictures…

1. Tenor shank Bach (wouldn’t seat, held with dowel).
2. Bass shank Bach (seats out a ways).
3. Schilke euph shank 51D (seats deep, past the shank designation number).
4. Old Willson euph shank (seats deep similar to Schilke, probably made by Lausmann).

Seems like the euph shanks are the closest, but seat pretty far in. Anyway, there it is, at least with this euph.

Looks like a goof up. Have not seen that.

That sort of reminds me of a five quarter Rudy that I had which was neither standard shank nor Euro Shank and the taper was not Jarno/Morse either. Even though the receiver was made out of the mouthpipe tube itself (inside an overpart), I just reamed it out to euro so that I could play it with >a< mouthpiece.
