Re: The "Where have I been, that I haven't heard this before?" moment
I had returned from living abroad and on the way in I heard "smells like teen spirit" on the radio.

Re: Small bore Yorks
Yorkboy is a person (though he does not over-post, as do I) to whom all should pay attention. He is elite-trained, has mastered a wide-range-of-styles (including additional mastery of some woodwinds), and is marvelous player, who also does superb jobs of "building" (restoring, and then enhancing ...

Re: "monster" tubas
What is a tuba anyway? NO Im not going there but the contrabass tuba, would not likely have been invented were it not for the gross orchestra. (dont read anything into that) So, lets talk about it. Tuba players are utilities in bands. And when they got invited to the "orchestra party", they started ...

Re: 2021 Musical New Year's Resolutions...
"I will never listen to anything the government tells me", sorry George Carlin reference. "I will never listen to anything a tuba teacher tells me", I never did anyway, except for a couple. If I could do it over again I would just listen about that much. Output beats input every time if its good.

Re: overcoming yama-yama men
Its this sort of high school induced bait of horn discussion that keeps tuba forums alive and well and I welcome it! But its also sort of dumb and demeaning to people who have actually spent years of their lives in practice rooms for 4-8 hours a day. The horns that sound good are well known to the ...

Re: Tuba gig bag Colors?
In college, I somehow conned Ms Altieri (Not sure if that was her name but you know who I mean), into making me a red gig bag (she used the material she used for the red piping on her standard bag). She had only done that for one other person (who I knew) and didnt really want to. Anyway years later ...

Re: The ZEN of watching TV while practicing tuba
So when Im out of shape, I know I have to play every day for a bit to get some chop strength, find the center, start playing in tune. 30 mins at first, then 45 mins, then an hour and so on. The way I keep expectations in check during this fragile time (rebuilding chops), is to only listen with one ...

The ZEN of watching TV while practicing tuba
When I was in college, a good friend of mine used to practice tuba while watching the yankees play, or (at the time) the People's Court on TV. He was a bit older than me and wiser (he eventually went pro). I thought it was funny. But I did find a use for this. Since I dont play regularly anymore, I ...

Re: Best slide grease for the tuba
I used to use the old Selmer brand slide/cork grease (red goo) and Al Cass. I’d put a thin layer of the slide grease on and then work the slide, one leg at a time, with the Al Cass. I think that was the concoction I was thinking of.... I believe I used this on the first valve slide specifically so t ...

harley_tuba.jpg tuba hauler Dude....! Ok this reminds me of something. My first ever tuba lesson was with James Jenkins then principal tuba of the Alabama Symphony. Re: Best slide grease for the tuba
Can you insert on leg of the slide at a time into each individual outer slides? That will isolate if the problem is a dent or a misalignment I suspect misalignment because I have to sort of see-saw it from side to side to get it to move. Which I have to be careful of because it so stiff I dont want ...
