^ I remember the Chester Schmitz / Boston Pops recording was up on YouTube for a while many years ago. It was recorded live in 1985. His recording was my favorite of these that I've heard, even though it sounds like there were a few changes made to it after he premiered it.
I believe Jim Self also ...

Re: some who who know a few things about acoustics and tapered tubes... Possibly Carl?
I've been sorta thinking about this for a while, including the human factor. I'm of the opinion that some people may experience intonation tendencies different than others for the same horn because of physiology.
For example, bloke has talked about the Yamaha 411 sousa being sharp on low BBb, and ...

Looks like the Alexander 163 and Gronitz PCK CC tubas are still there:

Re: Whiteman Grand Canyon Suite Cloudburst
It could be Min Leibrook, but I’m not sure when he left the Whiteman Band.
I believe you are correct. Did some digging, and it seems Min Leibrook is likely the tuba on the 1932 Whiteman/Grand Canyon Suite recording, as Fred Pfaff had apparently left the band by that time.
It's cool to see Fred ...

Re: Canadian Brass
Is there a list of what he's played over the years? I remember he played a rotary Yamaha C, a 661 I believe; I have a cassette of their French album that I think he played that on.
There is an old Sesame Street video of Chuck playing that Yamaha 661 -- I'm thinking late 1970s / early 1980s ...

Re: Chinese sousaphone valve sections for franken tuba?;
I believe he's Felipe bacon on YouTube. From my understanding he uses the new style one piece 5/4 tuba Bell not the Jupiter quantum detachable bell like I originally thought. He's built one with the Jupiter 4 valve sousaphone cluster and one with the York style Chinese front action valve set ...

Dirt cheap Conn 10j BBb (ebay)
These are fun little tubas that especially sound good in small / medium concert bands.

I enjoy these old clips. The recording technology was much more low-fi back then, but you get the idea and at least it was captured.

Re: Comparation between B&S PT-6R and Melton 25
^ I personally prefer the Melton 25 / MW-25 sound, yes. :smilie8:
I believe the MW-25 and B&S PT-6 share the same bell. BUT the flare is spun out to about 19" on the PT-6, and spun out to 17.7" on the MW-25. Otherwise same bell, same taper/dimensions. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: A new Blog - ENJOY
When I studied with Toby he had a 4/4 Holton cut and Yamaha 822 F. I have on my practice room wall an old ad from Mirafone with him and his 184. I'm told he had a B&S F in the early 80s.
What he played his year in Minneapolis I don't know. But I do know he referred to big tubas as "pillow ...

Re: Comparation between B&S PT-6R and Melton 25
I own a PT6R and I would describe the sound as colorful wide and I would like to know from that perspective how a Melton 25 would sound. Unfortunately I do not have one here in Peru to compare.
Please share all your thoughts here. Thank you ver much.

Re: MW 2155 $5,989 (Los Angeles/Craigslist)
I think the issue is simply that -- good deal or not -- $6,000 is still a lot of money for most folks.
And for that same $6k, you start getting into a lot more options, and you can find something you actually want, instead of jumping on the best deal.
I like the 2155. I don't remember being ...

Re: Low note help?
For crazy low, I have to use more and more top lip. Since the space between my nose and lips is not very wide, the rim of my mouth tends to get shoved into my septum (nose cartilage).
Strange, it's the opposite for me. For the low pedal register, the mouthpiece slides down my embouchure, my jaw ...

Surprised this tuba is still up for sale. They have a very reasonable price for it, and it's a great CC tuba. I don't need it, but I'd be VERY tempted to snatch it up if I had the money.

Re: New Tuba Day - Meinl Weston 2145
Fun fact, the 2155 (not the 2145) was marketed as being designed for Warren Deck to use as a quintet horn.
Warren Deck helped Meinl-Weston develop the piston/production 2155 as an all-around CC that he or his students could use in quintet and on some (lighter) pieces in orchestra. I have the ...

I’ve been playing BBb tuba for 4 years and still can’t go lower than “pedal” Eb (the one four lines and a space below the staff). Please help lol it’s embarrassing when we do pedal tone exercises in marching band and I’m on the false Eb instead of pedal Bb.

Re: Cerveny 681 BBb $1,500 (DFW, TX area/FB)
This tuba actually looks to be in very good condition. Just some lacquer wear and a few small pings; no major dents. The real test is playing it and making sure the slides and valves all move well. Otherwise, this tuba could be a great deal for someone wanting a decent 4/4, 4-valve BBb tuba for ...

Re: Getzen CB-50 CC $5,500 (Fleming Music, Houston, TX)
Who made the valves on these?
Getzen/Allied Supply made the piston valveset and the smaller branches. Meinl-Weston made and supplied the bell, larger/outer bows, and the 5th rotor & linkage for those tubas. All those parts were then assembled and finished by Getzen.
That's what I understand ...

What's interesting is that they list it as having 4 valves. But it does indeed have the 5th thumb rotor.
