Re: Conn 4J 4th Valve Stem Replacement

Could it be bent back?
That's what I usually do.
(I believe you would have luck straightening Olds or King stems and what do you think, but probably not with any of the new ones which hold those plastic valve guides on to the tops of the pistons. All of those newfangled ones are really fragile ...

Re: Conn 4J 4th Valve Stem Replacement

Have you tried just carefully bending it back???? If you are worried about trying it you friendly neighborhood brass guy should be able to do it for cheap, and replace your corks and felts too.

I've been reading about that. I'm a little nervous, so I might just take it down to Mark Metzler and ...

Conn 4J 4th Valve Stem Replacement

All,

I think that one of my daughters, during a cleaning project, managed to bend my 4th valve stem (which now brushes into the edge of the valve cover cap), making it stick.

I tested the valve using a stem from the third valve, and it functioned fine.

Doing research, my 4J was made using similar ...

Breath Training / Lung Training / Training...Training...

All,

I understand that it's not possible to increase vital capacity, but that we can train our lungs in other ways. I know that some of it is simply playing, but what do y'all recommend for other exercises? I row once a week for 1000m and will be increasing that over the summer as I have time. I've ...

That's an even bigger leap than my euph-tube.

Conn 4J...and now? Mouthpiece?

All,

Thanks to the invention / direction of one of our forum members, I am now in possession of a lovely Conn 4J. I have a Bach 18 mouthpiece, and have been playing with it as I get used to a bigger brass (former euph player) instrument.

I used a Schilke 51D on my euph, and enjoyed it quite a bit ...

Good Tuba for Value?

All,

I've been looking at the 1241 King BBb tubas out there. I see these three:

and

Re: What is this Olds?

I had an odd feeling it was a school tuba of some sort. Not just because of the three valved, but it's almost the same size as the Wilson 4-valve euph I played in college.

What is this Olds?

Serial No. 279316 - from that auction site. Looking for a "new" to me, re-beginner tuba. Thank you!

Re: ID Help - Elkhart Tuba Logo?

Thank you! I'll drop you a line soon.

Looking around a bit more on here, the Conn 20J is also fairly respected in that range. I'll take a peek for the four valves you recommend as well.

ID Help - Elkhart Tuba Logo?

Hello all!

I'm a former (and future) low brass player who is getting back into tuba-euph after some 22 years of absence. I'm looking about at used tubas in the $1-2K range, and came across one on marketplace with this odd logo. I live near Elkhart (and my daughter has a Conn 5D Elkhart horn, so I ...
