Happy May 3, 2024 - International Tuba Day
Happy Tuba Day to you fellow low enders. If I knew hoe to post a picture here from my album on-line I would. Instead, just imagina an extremely good looking , slightly post middle-aged, attractively balding short guy with a Yamaha silver 201....

Do they make a "tuba" chair?
So, this question came out of a point made in one of my previous discussions. Turns out turning my chair sideways gives me a tip of space to balance my horn on while playing in church. So, I wonder - does anyone make a chair that is slight,y longer than it is wide - to allow for more space. Instead ...

Tofu - it has been my experience that janitors and the secretaries in the office actually run the schools.... Be nice to them and good things happen.

Re: Need advice from Yamaha 201/321 players
Much thanks... Today I turned my chair 1/4 turn and balance my horn on the exposed corner in front of my legs. It worked well. I will still experiment with the stand. The tuba played well in both rehearsal and practice. I was very pleased. In fact, several people commented on the good bass section ...

Yes, thanks... I got a stand with the tuba. I have never used one before. I am trying to figure out the best way to use it.

Need advice from Yamaha 201/321 players
My first serious practice with my new (used) Yamaha YYB201SS did not go as well as I hoped it would. The water valve kept dripping on my left leg, and I had to reposition it several times. It has a new cork but that doesn't seem to help. The ring on the left rear of the horn, which I surmise is used ...

Re: Tuba Solo, Brass Band, et al…
Well above my pay grade - bravo!
I get so nervous when solo parts come my way. Sometimes I nail them in practice and nerve up in front of the audience.

Well, Bloke, thanks for the "whatever it cost" disclaimer. Mine are on the cheap end - a Yamaha 201 and a Jupiter 378. They do the job.... I do not intend to keep the Jupiter. I am starting to realize after years of playing horns supplied by schools that being a tubist is a rich man's sport.

Re: Hard cases with wheels.
I had one case, Jupiter, where one of the wheels lost a chunk. The tuba sounded like a helicopter rolling down the hall. With the new tuba, a Yamaha, (yeah I know you don't like them) I have a new wheeled case. Your advice seems prudent.

Re: predomination/preference by country (Could this actually become an interesting B flat versus C thread?)
in elementary, high school, and college the BBb predominated. I did play an Eb for a while. Decided I only want to learn one set of fingerings. The man I bought my latest horn from said that C predominate amount professional players. I do NOT know how the F fits in. Disclaimer: I am a hobby player ...

A easy question about a tuba in the pit
In our church orchestra we play three selections and head out to the pews for the service. About 45 minutes later we return to our seats for a final song and/or any specials. With my 3/4 Jupiter I would stand the horn bell end down on a carpeted floor. Now, I will be playing a much larger Yamaha 201 ...

Advice on what "wrap" to use....If any ???
The top bow on my new "used" tuba is a little dented. Until I can get it straightened out I would like to wrap it with a black cover for appearance sake. I have seen the done in some pics in my YouTube tuba listening videos. Any advice on what I can use to wrap it that won't discolor the tuba, draw ...

Question(s) for the older player
I was wondering how many tubists over the age of 65 play a full sized tuba vs. a 3/4 ? I have been advised that this is a bad idea. But I wanted to see what the actual users here have to say. Nothing beats real world experience. Also, is hitting higher notes a function of tuba size, mouthpiece ...

Advice on tuba purchase...
Went to visit a local tuba paler/seller today.
Has an older somewhat used Yamaha YBB201SS for sale at 2k w/ new case and mouthpiece. Very nice and tuba-wise individual.
Can pay and pick up.
Any thoughts or advice?

Got the tuba blues
Bought a 3/4 BBb to play in a community band from a little old lady who recovered from cancer but couldn't handle the instrument anymore. It plays OK, I guess, I am not professional enough to notice subtle differences. Turns out that it is a Jupiter 378, kind of the bottom of the food chain. I want ...

Re: A question of "playability'.....
Thank you all - the responses have, in many cases, exceeded my knowledge level. I have played for many years but have always considered myself a "hobbyist". I will be taking a trip to Baltimore Brass in 2 weeks to try out some BBb tubas. I am taking my 3 valve Jupiter along. I am not even sure what ...

A question of "playability'.....
I have heard it said that better quality instruments are easier to play than most student models. Can anybody explain this to me in practical terms? What differences might one actually notice that make the increased expense of buying an intermediate or professional level tuba worthwhile? I play in a ...
