Re: Interesting Tuba

Thanks for posting this Mike. I well remember those horns at Mr. Sear's shop in the mezzanine of the paramount Hotel. He would almost always tout their durability with " you can take these on the subway" hence we ,in the West Point Band referred to them as the Subway Model. Bob Stewart reminds me ...

Jake on Youtube

I just stumbled onto two live recordings of the CSO under Solti playing Bruckner 6 at Orchestra Hall in Chicago AND a Solti/CSO Bruckner 7at Albert Hall in 1978. The orchestra, and especially Jake knock it out of the park. I don't know how to post links but if you type in this information it should ...

Re: vintage King BB-flat nomenclature

I don't know the model number but Don Butterfield did have and extensively use it. Walter
Sear told me he got it from a guy in the West Point band while at Walter's studio in N.Y. He had those things that looked like a kid's bubble blower loop on the first and third slides rather than flipping ...

Re: tuba quartet instruments

Nobody agrees with me on this but a sax quartet uses four different instruments. Soprano, alto, tenor, and bari, and if a quintet add the bass sax. Four distinctly different voices, like a barbershop quartet where the lead has a high speaking voice and the other three have different sounding lower ...

Alan Jaffe (Preservation Hall) had one that he let me play and it was very good. I don't know what the bore size was. It' my understanding that these were intended for string ...
