Re: How not to use a lathe - or how to loose an arm

I think the angle of the video and the 2 x speed is contributing to the "dangerous" impression. Dan actually has a lot of space between him and bell Most of us in germany who make or repair bells would do the same. And lastly, I've worked with Dan in the past and I can say he is extremely safety ...

Re: FB (MI): "Karl King" (?) rotary BBb

The tuba is an Amati 4/4 BBb stencil. I believe Sum did make or at least assemble their own tubas many decades previously, but by the 70s it was just stencils. I contacted the seller and it was a typo, actually Karl Sum. The engraving reads Karl Sum, Instrumenten Bau., Kirnbach/Wolfach. I am ...

Re: The History of the Tuba Podcast Episode 7, The Patent of 1835

The patent is located at the Geheimes Staatsarchiv, Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Rep. 120, Ministerium
für Handel und Gewerbe. The storage area itself is outside of Berlin but is easy to reach. I'm hoping to make a trip there later this year to do a hi-res scan and will be sure to share.

Re: Q for Alex owners: super large shank mouthpieces

Hallo Arpthark, If you would prefer not to modify the receiver, I would recommend one of the Bruno Tilz, Walter Hilgers series of mouthpieces, most likely a WH-B1 or the not for the faint of heart WH-B2. The newer B3 and B4 I haven't tried yet and have no experience with. These series of mouthpieces ...

Re: Play in rotary valve double hinge mechanism

Hi Gocsick, unless the hinge pins are completely toast, usually one can swedge them with this type of pliers to remove excess play. https://www.ferreestoolsinc.com/products/swegding-pliers Technically when you replace this type of old linkage, one would completely discard the rivets and T-joints ...

Re: Sandner Subkontra C-Tuba

Hi Dave, thank you for the further info! I'm a big fan  You are correct, it's a contrabass CC like any standard CC tuba however the bell and bows are "extra wide". It was simply misleading marketing from Sandner around 1900. The journalist and film crew certainly didn't do their due ...

Re: New tuba: GDR era B&S model 90 F

Just by chance I have a model 90 on the workbench today. The bore of the tubing may be 17mm but the valves themselves are 1mm larger and most B&S tubas follow suit. I've installed a number of 5th and 6th valves on these tubas over the years and perhaps the best spot is after the main tuning slide on ...

Thank you Blake, that's great to know!

Kevbach33:
The bell seam runs completely through the bell and doesn't have a gusset. The end diameter is 42cm but the throat is fatter than standard or the later 3103 series.

Re: For sale: B&S Goldbrass Baritone

I understand the journey is quite far, but you are most welcome in Berlin if you would like to visit. Everything is better with rotors;) And to agree with arpthark, one would expect it to be more expensive, but considering the distance and size of box, it's quite reasonable. For example: Fully ...
